PCCA Summer Boot Camp Schedule

PCCA is excited to inform you of our 2015 Summer Boot Camp Schedule!  The two-day Introductory Compounding Lab Boot Camp is tremendously popular.  It is designed to introduce students to the more unique and novel dosage forms that are utilized by today's compounding pharmacists, to enlighten them as to the reality and feasibility of opening their own compounding pharmacy, and to inspire them to think of compounding as a viable, rewarding, and fulfilling career pathway.
Two full days of lecture and hands-on laboratory work provide a basic understanding of the skills, tools, and equipment used in Contemporary Compounding.  Students complete eleven dosage forms they take home with them, focusing on dosage forms such as lollipops, lip balms, troches, and transdermal delivery systems.  Lectures on various contemporary compounding topics, compounding as a career path, and patient case studies are also on the agenda.
Here are the 4 dates scheduled at our PCCA facility in Houston, TX:
·        May 28 – 29
·        June 8 – 9
·        July 9 – 10
·        August 6 – 7

Please contact Paige Street (pnstreet@presby.edu) if you are interested in helping with this event. The first 5 people to send an email will be the ones to help.

10 volunteers are also needed to help set up the 5K. The first 10 people to email Caleb Staggs (castaggs@presby.edu) will be contacted to help with the 5K. This will also count as your non-pharmacy service hour!

There will also be a blood drive held at the YMCA during the health fair. They are in desperate need for blood and we are trying to gage the number of participants that we would have. If you have not already signed up for the blood drive, please click on the link below:

Immunization Expansion Legislation

Great news!  Senator Cleary filed our immunization expansion legislation on Wednesday and it has been referred to the Medical Affairs Committee.  The bill number is S.413.  If passed, three very important changes to pharmacy practice law will occur:
1.       An interprofessional committee will decide what vaccines pharmacists can administer without a prescription (no need for further legislation!)
2.       Pharmacy students can administer vaccines provided they are certified and are directly supervised by a pharmacist
3.       Pharmacists can administer flu vaccine to patients down to the age of 12 years without a prescription

In order for S.413 to pass we need your help!  Please contact your senator and ask for his/her support for Senate Bill 413.  Click the link below to find out who your senator is and how to contact him or her; as well as to find out more information about the bill: http://www.scrx.org/pharmacy-vaccine-expansion-legislation

I have attached a link to a document that provides examples of a phone message and an email or letter.  Please feel free to copy or edit based on your own thoughts about the bill.

This would be a HUGE win for pharmacy and I would really appreciate your help in getting it passed!

Let me know if you have any questions.  A big thank you to Dr. Patti Fabel with South Carolina College of Pharmacy for providing templates to use for communication.

Thanks!

Dr. Shealy

PC School of Pharmacy 5K/Health Fair and Blood Drive

Many members of the pharmacy school envisioned a day in which we could serve the community with an event that promoted healthy living and activity. This event has become known as the March on Health Wellness Fair and 5K. On this day, we celebrate those individuals who take the first steps in training for a 5K race. We celebrate those who are willing to make a change in their current lifestyle in hopes of maintaining or restoring good-health. We want members of our community to take an active role in caring for their health and we stand with them to encourage this change.

Our 3rd Annual March on Health event will be held in Clinton on March 21, 2015. This event will involve a 5K race, run or walk, at Bailey Stadium-Presbyterian College. Shortly following the race, an extensive health fair focusing on health and wellness will be held at the YMCA- Clinton, from 10am-2pm. Here, trained pharmacy students will be available to provide FREE health screenings for everyone. There will also be educational sessions available from guest speakers and our trained pharmacists, as well as FREE healthy food options.

As part of this event, due to the desperate need for blood, we also plan to hold a blood drive. The Blood Connection bus can only come if we have a large enough number of participants. Please indicate via the Survey Monkey link below, if you would be willing to donate.

For more information or questions about the Health Fair, please visit our website at: http://pharmacy.presby.edu/march-on-health-5k/ or contact Lizzy Robinette at peholden@presby.edu.
