Dressing Down During Finals

PSGA will be collecting cans for the United Ministries of Clinton during the week of Decmber 8 - 12.  We ask that you bring two cans per day that you would like to dress down.  Along with the boxes for the cans, there will be stickers and sheets at the front of the lecture halls for students to write their name, the date, and the number of cans contributed. Thank you in advance! Please remember this is on your honor!  

P3s: Although most of you will not be present, if you can find it in the goodness of your heart, the boxes will be in the lecture halls all this week as well!

There is a winter conference in combination with main campus January 30-February 1 in Black Mountain, NC.  The cost is $30/person which includes lodging, food, and a t-shirt.  Please contact Mennie Zoogley (mzoogley@presby.edu) for more information.

We are taking up donations for elder baskets through Broad Street Methodist.  If you would like to donate, they are accepting non-perishable canned goods, rice, dry beans, pasta, grits, packaged tuna and salmon, laundry detergent, dish washing liquid, bath soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, hand lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush, toilet paper, box of tissues, and paper towels. 

Donations are due by December 5th at noon.  We would really like get enough items to make a couple of baskets.  Thank you!

Evaluation Completion for Dress Down Week: Final Tally

As of this morning, the evaluation completion rates for each class are as follows:

P1: 87%

P2: 77%

P3: 95%

·         Congratulations to the P1 and P3 classes who each achieved the required response rate of at least 85% and are therefore invited to dress down during the week of December 1^st through 5^th. You will still need to dress professionally for your lab periods/lab finals, but are welcome to dress casually for your classes next week otherwise. Do  make sure to maintain modesty and dress appropriately for ventures outside your home (i.e.; no pajamas).

This is not the end of evaluations for the semester.  All evaluations not yet completed will stay open and ready to receive your feedback through Friday December 12^th.  As you are completing any final evaluations, please still keep these notes in mind…

Research Symposium

On January 10th, 2015 the Office of Research will be hosting the First Annual Research Symposium. Faculty members will present their current research. APhA-ASP Chapter Meeting

Our next Chapter Meeting is this Wednesday November 19^th from 12:00-1:00pm in room 104.  We are privileged to have Dr. Ashley Gulyas coming to speak at our meeting.  Dr. Gulyas is a 2013 graduate of Wingate University and works at Walgreens as a pharmacist with the unique title of being a “Travel Health Consultant.”  Dr. Gulyas will be explaining what her title entails as well as other unique functions of the job at “The Corner of Happy and Healthy.”  Food will be provided during the meeting, but you must complete the following survey monkey by Sunday night at midnight to partake.

This week (November 17-21) is national "Get Smart About Antibiotics Week"! What will you do to promote appropriate antibiotic use? This week, SSHP will host trivia questions pertaining to antibiotics.Trivia questions will be available for all students to answer on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. There will be an "Antibiotic Trivia" poster in front of the podium in both lecture halls which will have the daily trivia question. The winner from Monday, Wednesday and Friday will receive a Dress Down token! The student who participates the most during the week will win the PC Swag Bag! The PC Swag Bag consists of many great PCSP items that you don't have already! Winners will be announced in Pharm News.

The next dress down day will be Monday, November 24.  Bring $3 to go towards stuffed animals to be purchased for children at Three Rivers Medical in Columbia, SC. Don't forget the get a sticker from your class president. Please keep in mind that if you have lab on Monday, make sure you still are dressed appropriately.

This week we will be accepting filled shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child!!  Operation Christmas Child will send these boxes to areas where children will not receive a gift this year.

• There are donation boxes located near the student café, the wellness center, and Mrs. Cline's desk.  Donations will be accepted until Friday afternoon. 
• Please see the attached brochure on how to pack a shoebox. 
• Also, please print out the brochure and attach the gender and age group tag onto the shoebox. 
• Just a suggestion: the tupperware containers that are about the same size as a shoebox are ideal for packing, because the children in third world countries will use them for transferring water and keeping food fresh. 
• There is a $7 fee for shipping.  Please also include the shipping fee in your box.  You may also pay the shipping fee online to receive a tracking number to see where your box travels!
• If you don't have time to shop and still want to help, we will be accepting donations to help pay for shipping fees!  Please put any donations for shipping fees into Markie Webster's box.

CPNP

CPNP will be collecting items for our 2nd annual "Deck the Halls" pajama drive starting next week (November 17 - December 5). All pajamas donated will be given to children at Hall psychiatric hospital in Columbia. 

Please look for  specific sex, age, and sizes needed in the student café. There will be boxes located outside of each lecture hall to place pajamas in. Please help us make the season a little brighter for these children in need. Thanks!

Red Heart Gala Interest Meeting

Red heart health month is quickly approaching! Before December break comes in full force we need to begin planning The Red Heart Gala, which will be February 21, 2015. In order for this event to be successful again this year we need some input and help from students! There will be an interest meeting this Friday, November 12, 2014 at 12pm in room 141. There will be committees to help with decoration, t-shirt, and advertising/sales. This is a great way to get some leadership experience and get to know people you have not gotten an opportunity to work with. A Message from Dr. Asbill, Professor of Pharmaceutics:

I am happy to announce that on Saturday, January 17th, the PCSP will be hosting a local compounding competition for our pharmacy students.  This event is being sponsored by Medisca.  The winning group we select from our local competition will represent the PCSP at the National Competition this spring (March 21st and 22nd) at the University of Florida.  A sign-up sheet will be posted shortly by NCPA President Paige Ross on NCPA’s bulletin board upstairs.   For the National competition, there are three components in which each group will be evaluated (Compounding Classic, Regulatory Challenge and Quality Compounding).

The compounding classic component features the formulation, preparation, presentation and documentation of three (3) compounded medications. From a list of chemicals provided, students are asked to allocate each one to a specific medication and associated delivery system for a given route of delivery.

The regulatory challenge component features a regulatory challenge whereby students are issued a single or series of controversial issues involving regulatory standards of practice. Prior to this event, student teams, along with their faculty representative, will have been given the opportunity to formulate a written response, following a prescribed template, in an attempt to ultimately find reasonable solutions to a series of challenges facing today’s compounding industry experts. Teams will select an orator to deliver a clear message and defend a position stand on the issue(s) being addressed before a panel of industry experts, fellow students and faculty.

The quality compounding component features the creation and hosting of a kiosk at a trade show. In a highly interactive and social milieu, each student member of the team will be afforded the opportunity to represent themselves at a trade show. Kiosk posters will be created on-site. Representation of the underlying concept(s) is the focus of this event.

For our local competition, groups will compete in a compounding classic component and it will be similar in design to the nationalcompetition.  In addition, we will have a written component (test) in which students will have to perform calculations involving compoundedpreparation and answer questions about general information regarding the compounding of both sterile and non sterile preparations.  In addition, there will be a formal debate by each of the groups.

Teams are a group of three students.  Only the P2s, P3s and P4s are allowed to compete in the local competition.  The date of our local competition will be Saturday, January 17, 2015.   

NCPA

Our next meeting will be this Monday, November 10th from 12-1 and we will be having Chili for lunch! Also our annual Christmas ornament fundraiser will be this week everyday from 12-1 in the Cafe. Lastly, this week is NCPA/APhA Diabetes Awareness Week and each day trivia questions will be in Rooms 104 and 271 and there will be prizes! Don't forget to wear red on Friday! We know that teacher, course, preceptor, and experiential site evaluations are time consuming and can be somewhat tedious at times.  The input that we receive from you from these evaluations is immensely important to us, though.  We want to do something to help provide a little extra incentive for completing your evaluations that you might appreciate.

·         Beginning November 7^th, the response rates for teacher, course, preceptor, and experiential site evaluations will begin being tracked for each class.  This information will then be provided to you on a weekly basis via PharmNews.

·         On November 25^th, the classes who have achieved a response rate of at least 85% will be announced. 

·         Each class who has achieved a response rate of at least 85% as of November 25^th will be invited to dress down during the week of December 1^stthrough 5^th.  While 85% may seem high, I can assure you that we have had classes well-surpass this rate in the past.

As you are completing your evaluations, please keep these notes in mind:
